The Ministry for Primary Industries is looking for a Principal Adviser to support the Director Government Services.


About our team | Mō tō mātou rōpū

The Government Services Directorate is responsible for the interface with MPI Ministers’ Offices – this work includes Ministerial Servicing and OIA team functions. This role will work across both those functions and will ensure a greater level of cooperation between the two teams and a unified sense of purpose. The Directorate has recently gained a new Director who is keen to introduce new systems to ensure the team’s processes are aligned and run as smoothly as possible.  


About You | Mōu

You will have expert knowledge and wide experience across Parliamentary and Select Committee accountability processes, Ombudsman review, Ministerial correspondence, OIAs and WPQs. You will understand Government decision-making and operating procedures and will have a finely tuned risk radar and be able to develop strategies for risk mitigation and management.

You will be a good networker with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of people. You will have a strong track record of achievement and be able to quickly analyse situations and make sense of complex information.

In addition, you will have experience and interest in process improvement, workflow management, and the machinery of government. 


 About the role | Kōrero mō te tūranga

  • Provide advice on content quality assurance, business process performance and benchmarking analysis to the Director Government Services and wider organisation in accordance with key accountabilities. 
  • Be responsible for drafting complex replies to official correspondence and other documents, within established timeframes and to a high standard.
  • Assist the Director Government Services to report and analyse trends, identify issues and engage with others to seek solutions to continuously improve services.
  • Maintain strong relationships with the Ministers’ Offices, which includes providing advice, managing queries and coordinating responses to requests for information including the management of oral questions.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring for other team members.
  • Establish successful professional relationships and work effectively with Ministers’ offices and staff while maintaining independence.
