Are you the person who looks at a complex challenge and thinks ‘I want to sort that out’?Do you love working with multiple stakeholders, strong views, high stakes and big impact?Does making a difference get you out of bed in the morning? If that’s you, join the Council’s Climate Change Response team, and lead the development of our adaptation strategy – this is your opportunity to have a positive impact on a challenge affecting the long-term future of Wellington communities.Te Atakura – First to Zero is our plan for becoming a zero-carbon capital city, demonstrating our commitment to urgent action on climate change. To deliver this ambition, we’re growing our Climate Change Response team. We need people who care and are passionate about climate action if we’re to hit our net zero carbon target by 2050. But we know some amount of climate change is inevitable and already underway, and that we will need to adapt. That’s where you come in.In this newly created role, you’ll help chart a course for Wellington communities – working with local residents and businesses, mana whenua, insurers, banks, central government, and asset owners across the Council, to figure out how we are going to adapt over the decades to come to more frequent and severe weather events. You’ll come across diverse and differing views, strong emotions, and ambiguity both within the Council and externally. That’s when your excellent resilience, influencing, collaboration and negotiation skills come to the fore. By coupling this with your passion for climate change and understanding of the science you’ll help break down complex ideas into a way that people can connect with.Your thought leadership on climate change adaptation will bring our elected members and senior leaders on the journey, so you’ll need to bring with you some significant political acumen. Ideally, you’ll seamlessly build relationships in a political environment with confidence. To really shine, you’ll need strengths in engagement, communication, innovative thinking and empathy. You’ll be a strong critical and strategic thinker, and you’ll more than likely have a background in science, engineering, or planning (or similar). It wouldn’t be a surprise if you had recently specialised in climate or environmental policy.Regardless of your background, you’ll be pragmatic and action-oriented; absolutely committed to supporting our vision for the city. The world has been talking about climate change for some time, but we haven’t done nearly enough. Now is the time to change that. We need to do things differently, take ownership and challenge each other to think about practical steps that will shape the future of this city – a city that is prepared for the climate crisis. As a senior member of a team focused on supporting the city to change, respond, and take action on climate change, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to other parts the Te Atakura work programme in addition to adaptation. This really is your dream job to channel your climate action passion into.
