About us | Ko wai mātou

At Waka Kotahi, the NZ Transport Agency, it all starts with our people. The organisation’s performance and success depends on the people who choose to make this a great place to work and make a difference for Aotearoa. The Transport Agency has a strong future focus, understanding that new technologies and changing customer expectations mean the transport system we know today will not be the one we deliver in ten years’ time.

The Transport Services Group plan, design, build, operate and maintain an integrated transport system which reflects our plans and priorities and to provide, improve and maintain the land transport system to effectively enable transport services.

The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

The New Zealand Government has allocated $3 billion to invest in regional economic development through the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF). The Transport Agency plays a significant role in supporting the PGF as transport is recognised as providing access to the jobs, education and essential services that enable regions to grow.

We are seeking an experienced Principal Advisor who will be responsible for all PGF related reporting including but not limited to reports to Ministers, Ministry of Transport (MoT) and Provincial Development Unit (PDU), PGF content in Transport Agency accountability documents and monitoring reports, Statement Performance Expectations (SPE) measure definitions and reporting, Transport Services’ group reports, as well as PGF-related briefings and ad-hoc requests for various internal and external audiences.

This will involve working across multiple groups to develop processes and products and to ensure these are successfully embedded within the Transport Agency.

With a natural ability to strategise and apply critical thinking you will provide sound judgement in the development of options and provision of advice.

This is a great opportunity for a senior level advisor with previous government experience who can lead from the front on complex projects involving multiple objectives and diverse stakeholders.

About you | Ko koe tēnei

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in the government sector at a senior level
  • Proven expertise and experience and a deep understanding of the machinery of government, including an in-depth understanding of performance monitoring and reporting
  • Ability to assess relatively large amounts of information to identify key points and trends and distil “the story”
  • Strong customer service orientation and experience in providing support to Ministers and executive teams
  • Proven experience in leading, influencing and building credibility across a range of stakeholders, and/or in a complex organisation
  • Experience leading and influencing others in a fast-paced, complex and often ambiguous environment
  • Highly developed influencing, networking and interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain effective and trusted relationships
  • Experience creating and proposing innovative solutions to challenges as they arise
  • Highly effective written and oral presentation, communications and advocacy skills
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline
