  • Summary:

We are recruiting a permanent Principal Advisor Policy to join the Policy Design unit in Maritime New Zealand’s Regulatory Policy team, based in Wellington.

About us

Maritime New Zealand is the national regulatory compliance and response agency for the safety, security and marine protection of New Zealand’s coastal and inland waterways. It works to develop and maintain the national safety, security and marine protection regulations that govern the operation of vessels, ports and offshore installations in New Zealand waters.

About the role

You will develop and deliver high quality policy advice, including on complex issues requiring the ability to manage relationships across government and the maritime sector. This may lead to working on proposals to change secondary legislation or instead identifying alternative policy interventions to deliver safe, secure, and clean outcomes.

Your work programme will reflect Maritime New Zealand’s wide range of activity- including safety management systems, protecting the marine environment, health and safety, navigational safety, vessel design and construction standards, personnel licensing, port security, international conventions, and emergency preparedness and response. You will also play an important role reviewing the work of other advisors to help improve their policy craft, as well as supporting our team culture through role modelling Maritime New Zealand’s values of integrity, respect, and commitment.

You will have the following:

  • Recognition as an expert policy practitioner and thought leader
  • A track record of successfully delivering policy initiatives
  • Advanced analytical skills, sound reasoning, and excellent judgement
  • An in depth understanding of New Zealand’s policy and regulatory development framework
  • Experience providing advice to Ministers, Cabinet Committees or other high level decision makers
  • Excellent oral and written skills, including the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely
  • A track record of building strong relationships with stakeholders
  • Experience coaching or mentoring others to develop policy skills

About the team

The Regulatory Systems Policy Design unit sits in the Regulatory Policy team alongside Guidance Design and Service Design units. The team brings an ‘end to end’ approach to policy development so that we use the right intervention for the right problem, and design fit for purpose regulatory systems that are implemented well and keep pace with change and innovation.
