The Building System Performance Branch has an exciting fixed term opportunity for someone looking to broaden their skills and experience or for a senior professional to step up as a Principal Advisor Regulation.

We are seeking somebody who has experience and a strong interest in regulatory practice to help a busy team of building performance and engineering experts implement high quality regulatory changes. The role includes a mixture of providing input from a regulatory perspective as the team rolls out important technical changes to the performance requirements for buildings, while also working on a longer term strategy for modernising the Building Code itself.

The ideal person would use their knowledge of regulatory principles and processes to provide leadership and support within a team tasked with ensuring the Building Code is delivering better buildings for New Zealanders.  You don’t need to have building specific regulatory experience to be successful, what is more important is your understanding of regulatory concepts and frameworks.

You will be provided the opportunity to:

  • Critique existing and proposed regulation
  • Champion good regulatory practice
  • Analyse and compare approaches to building regulation internationally
  • Collaborate with others (internally and externally) to identify priorities for change
  • Contribute to a vision that will guide the future of the Building Code

Specific tasks will include: 

  • Contribute to the Building Performance and Engineering Leadership team
  • Progress the current project underway to develop a strategy for the future of the building code
  • Develop materials that support better understanding of building code regulatory requirements
  • Facilitate and support the development of operational policies
  • Identify overlaps with other legislation/regulatory responsibilities and strategies to manage this
  • Review and provide input into advice papers and proposals
  • Input into long-term planning as well as coaching and supporting others

You will:

  • Be self-motivated
  • Have a sound understanding of the role of a regulator
  • Familiar with regulatory concepts and frameworks
  • Be eager to exercise and/or further develop your leadership skills
  • Able to focus on both short-term deliverables while paving the way for long-term change
