About the role

In this newly created permanent role, you’ll be responsible for delivering intelligence products and services to meet customer needs.   It’s a great position to deliver and influence some of the new and emerging work we are doing in this space.

Your deep understanding of intelligence methodologies and intelligence tools will enable you to develop high quality reports and advice that make a difference to New Zealand.

You will drive MBIE’s international intelligence work programme responsibilities, such as joint working groups. You’ll also work with domestic and international agencies and the broader intelligence community.

You’ll provide technical leadership to analysts within MBIE’s Intelligence Unit, providing coaching and mentoring to enable them to deal with complex, ambiguous and sensitive requests.  You will also take the lead role in building technical capability within the team, and developing a culture of continuous improvement.


Skills and experience required

We’re really keen to hear you if you have:

  • 2+years analyst experience at a senior level, preferably in a national security environment and ideally have experience in supporting a national security response
  • Proven mentoring and coaching skills will be a distinct advantage
  • Excellent analytical skills, with a problem-solving approach and robust judgement
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain excellent relationships across  our broad and diverse customers
  • Knowledge of security and demonstrated understanding of the management of classified or sensitive information
  • A collaborative and action-oriented approach to issues, tasks and projects
  • The ability to adapt within a dynamic environment

You must be a New Zealand Citizen, or hold a residence class visa, and be able to gain and maintain a national security clearance.


Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET government security clearance. In order to achieve this they must be a New Zealand citizen or resident who has resided continuously in this country for 10 years, OR a citizen of Australia, Canada, The United Kingdom, or The United States of America; and have resided continuously in one or more of those countries for the past 10 years prior to application, with a background history which is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a high level.

This position is based within the MBIE Intelligence Unit, and is part of the Intelligence, Data and Insights branch within Immigration New Zealand.
