  • Maritime New Zealand is the national regulatory, compliance and response agency that looks after the safety, security and environmental protection of coastal and inland waterways on behalf of all New Zealanders. 

    We are recruiting a Principal Investigator to join Maritime NZ’s Investigations team. The role will preferably be based in Wellington, Auckland, Tauranga, Nelson or Christchurch, although consideration will be given to applicants from other centres where Maritime NZ has an office.

    The Investigations team supports Maritime NZ’s front-line compliance operations and risk-based compliance activities to achieve improved safety outcomes. It also holds the national investigation portfolio and responds to the most serious and complex of maritime incidents and accidents. In this capacity, the team is responsible for increasing the Compliance Group’s investigation standard and capability through training and coaching frontline staff and their managers.

    The key responsibility of this role is to provide leadership to the specialist investigative functions for Maritime NZ. As well as leading the more complex investigations, the role will be a thought leader and mentor in investigation work. This includes working closely with Specialist Investigators, Maritime Officers and Managers to ensure that investigative best practice is followed. The Principal Investigator will also oversee the MO mentoring programme. The role uses a variety of techniques to investigate a diverse range of compliance and safety matters. The subject matter includes accidents and incidents in the maritime transport sector, serious harm injuries, fit and proper person matters, joint agency investigations, and covert investigations into non-compliant or criminal behaviour.

    It is a requirement of this position for the person to hold warrants under the Maritime Transport Act and the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. Necessary training will be provided as part of the position.

    Our ideal candidate will have a maritime and/or accident/incident investigation background and will be expected to demonstrate a very high standard of investigation capability. Extensive experience and knowledge of legal interpretation and judicial processes are essential, and well developed analytical and interpersonal skills are vital. You will need to be able to self-motivate and work independently. The successful candidate will be expected to lead by example.

    The successful candidate will need to have a current and clean driver’s license and be available to travel within NZ at short notice.
