An opportunity has arisen in the National Management Accounting team to support the Wellington Office Groups and the Department’s senior leadership teams to enable them to achieve their financial and operational goals. The Principal National Management Accountant position is a permanent position, reporting into the National Management Accounting Manager.   


As part of a close-knit team you will have the opportunity to be involved in a broad range of financial functions which will allow you to hone your leadership and engagement skills with senior leadership teams. 


You will be the financial expert and first point of contact for the Corporate Services and People & Engagement Groups and across the finance team. The role is responsible for providing business partnering support to the Groups leadership teams and budget holders. You will be supported by and have day to day management responsibility of 2 management accountants. You will engage with the Department’s senior leadership teams to provide strategic analysis and reporting to support the achievement of organisational objectives. 


Key role responsibilities include:

  • Day to day management of 2 management accountants.
  • To support, facilitate and help plan team objectives in addition to your own areas of business support.
  • To provide management accounting analysis, reports and advice to Deputy Director-Generals, their leadership teams, and budget managers.
  • To facilitate and support the Department’s senior leadership teams to achieve Department objectives.
  • To perform and enhance strategic analysis capabilities to improve the Department’s understanding of its organisational performance.
  • To provide mentoring and support to team members.
  • To perform and support the Department’s budgeting requirements, monthly variance reporting, forecasting and baseline updates.
  • To provide support, advice and quality assurance on business cases.
  • To facilitate external best practice across the wider finance team.


The successful applicant will have:

  • Proven experience in supporting and engaging with organisation’s senior leadership teams.
  • Proven experience in managing and mentoring staff.
  • An accounting qualification and/or relevant senior management accounting experience.
  • A strong business partnering focus, skilled at identifying and responding to user needs.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Strong team/process planning and co-ordinating skills.
  • Proven problem-solving ability. 
  • The ability to explain financial processes to non-financial managers.
  • A commitment to pro-active service delivery and to strive for excellence.


Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
