The Ministry of Health is the lead Public Health agency on the national COVID-19 response and the Māori Health Directorate provides kaitiakitanga over the Ministry’s Māori COVID-19 health response to deliver on our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori health aspirations and requirements, and equity in health outcomes.


Mō tō mātou rōpū – About our team: 

This role sits within the Māori Health Strategy and Policy team which focuses on innovative shifts to improve our health and disability system to deliver equitable and sustainable Māori health and wellbeing outcomes. The Māori Health Strategy and Policy team, working alongside the COVID-19 directorate, leads the Māori health COVID-19 response, honoring Te Tirite o Waitangi commitments and prioritising equity in health outcomes for Māori.


Te whainga poto o tēnei tūranga – What is the purpose of this role? 

This role leads in the Māori Health Covid-19 response and delivers exemplary quality policy advice to improve health outcomes for Māori, honoring Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations as part of the complex and challenging environment.


Ngā Pūkenga me ngā Wheako – Skills & Experience: 

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Significant experience in developing policy, working with, influencing and leading a range of stakeholders, as well as briefing Ministers
  • Experience at senior levels with demonstrated evidence of developing effective policy policies and programmes that make a difference for Māori and other populations groups across New Zealand
  • Knowledge of key issues impacting on the New Zealand health and disability sector including a clear understanding of the current and emerging issues for Māori and other populations groups across New Zealand
  • A sound understanding and commitment to Te Tiriti O Waitangi and its practical application
