About the role:

Expressions of interest for a secondment until January 2023 are sought for this Private Secretary role.  This role will support the Small Business Policy portfolio.

In this role you will have ample opportunity to make a difference through the provision of effective and appropriate support and advice.  You’ll also use your excellent relationship management and influencing skills to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and actively build and manage networks of contacts within Parliament, MBIE, and other external portfolio stakeholders.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the workings of government from a different angle.  You will gain experience supporting the Minister, working closely with a range of senior MBIE staff, relevant Crown entities and wider Parliamentary staff.  Your contribution will help to ensure the portfolio management runs well. You will be coming into an interesting and varied portfolio at a time when Small Business is front and centre for New Zealand.

What you will need to bring

This role would suit a person who thrives in a fast-paced and challenging work environment and therefore you will need to demonstrate:

  • Experience with the machinery of government; particularly ministerial correspondence, OIAs, parliamentary questions and policy
  • Good knowledge of government administration and legal requirements around dealing with private and official information
  • Strong written communication and proofreading skills with an eye for detail
  • Strong organisational skills with ability to manage processes and meet competing deadlines
  • Well-developed relationship management skills and confident working with a wide range of people
  • The ability to work independently, motivate yourself  and remain calm, focussed and resilient under pressure
  • Sound judgement and high personal integrity

The role requires a Confidential Security Clearance.
