What you will do
The Procurement and Commercial Practice Lead is a key leadership role within the Defence Commercial Services (DCS) Commercial Delivery team. Lead and manage the delivery of the end to end procurement lifecycle with a strategic focus, within the Defence Estate and Infrastructure portfolio stream; ensuring the minimisation of risk, achievement of public value; aligned to NZDF’s strategic objectives and outputs.
You’ll play a key role and be responsible for contributing to improving the overall capability and effectiveness of the NZDF commercial function, as well enabling the development and growth of your team.

What we need
We’re looking for an outstanding leader with a proven track record as a strategic procurement professional, who can deliver the required outputs and lead, motivate and develop teams. You’ll be setting clear strategic direction and engaging successfully with customers and key stakeholders.
Our top priority for this position is to recruit someone who is passionate and knowledgeable with demonstrable skills in strategic procurement, people leadership and exceptional customer delivery. You’ll be agile, innovative, excited by challenges, decisive and have strong values, ethics and integrity. You’ll have experience in dealing well with pressure, remaining calm and being empathetic.
You’ll have demonstrated commercial acumen as well as the ability to think strategically, a sound understanding and experience of the end-to-end procurement lifecycle process, the Government Procurement Rules and best practice strategic procurement behaviour, particularly within the property, construction and infrastructure environment. Preferably you’ll also have experience working within the public sector, although this is not essential.
As a leader who enjoys and excels at communicating, you’ll be prepared to put the needs of the customer at the centre of everything you do, whilst aligning your and your team’s deliverables to the NZDF Strategic Plan.
Your refined communication skills include being able to engage with and influence a wide range of stakeholders with ease, and your written work will be of a high standard. You’ll be a skilled negotiator who knows when to push back, offering alternatives and information around the ‘why’, whilst still retaining customers’ engagement and buy-in.

DCS is a unit within the wider Joint Defence Services (JDS) portfolio. The JDS portfolio exists to harness the power of the Defence Force’s enabling functions (including Logistics, Communications and Information Systems, Security, Strategic Programmes and Commercial Services) by integrating them. DCS leads and enables the wider NZDF Commercial function; including procurement planning, sourcing, contracting and strategic supplier relationship/contract management. This is achieved by delivering enabling policies, frameworks, training and systems; and the monitoring of commercial risk and performance across the organisation.
