This is a fixed term position for a period of 2 years. This role may be located out of Wellington, Dunedin or Hamilton.

Now is the perfect time to join the National Compliance Team at the Department of Conservation as we increase in size and capability to strengthen our conservation law enforcement function. DOC’s compliance function makes a key contribution to the protection of New Zealand’s unique wildlife, cultural and natural taonga. It does this by enforcing compliance with the rules that apply on public conservation land, in marine reserves and mammal sanctuaries, and to protected wildlife.


He angitūtanga: About the Role

As our next Programme Lead, you will be responsible for leading the programme and strategy development for concessions and land use compliance. You will develop a concession compliance strategy that clearly identifies priorities and provides a range of tools to address noncompliance. This role will involve significant collaboration across the department as you work to ensure concession conditions are fit-for-purpose from enforcement, auditing and monitoring perspectives. You will operate with a continuous improvement approach and demonstrate sound change management principles. Throughout the journey, you will also monitor and manage your work to ensure alignment with other programme requirements.  


  • Experience in a regulatory compliance role, preferably in the public sector
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in developing auditing and monitoring frameworks at a national scale
  • Solid understanding of compliance and enforcement frameworks
  • Confidence analysing system performance and implementing solutions to enhance performance
  • A proactive approach with excellent time management skills
  • The ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships and navigate complex relationships
  • Experience managing and monitoring budgets
  • A relevant tertiary qualification
