The role

The primary function of this role is to lead the development of the proposed Wharekirauponga Underground Mine, overseeing scope development, element integration, component staging and ensuring delivery is optimised, whilst working with other Waihi operations to deliver best value for the company and its stakeholders.

This involves development and delivery of the WKP underground mine detailed design, development sequencing, contracting strategy, operational readiness systems, operational technical organisational structure and ramp up phases in alignment with company guidelines, ultimately successfully transitioning to steady state operational management.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Constructively lead 5-7 direct reports and project team of 10+ consultants
  • Lead the production and implementation of the proposed project strategy to the highest international standards, in line with other Waihi operations and managing the mine design process
  • Strategy development and implementation for development and operational readiness of the potential mine
  • Detailed assessment and recommendations of underground mining and materials delivery options
  • In preparation for mine development, and should consents be granted, implement operational readiness requirements including recruitment, training, contracting strategy, equipment selection and mobilisation, pre-works to ensure mine operational ramp up is successful Communication with stakeholders, informing them of project phases well before they occur
  • Oversee the contracting strategy, schedule and costs for implementation of the mine development
  • Active participation in the consenting and permit approval strategy for the project
  • Integration of safety, environmental, cultural, community and social aspects into the project plan, through engagement with regulators, iwi, community, NGO’s and other stakeholders
  • Coordinate the development of studies for the design, baseline data, development schedule and mining plan to produce a clear development execution plan for the project
  • Conform with company policies, procedures and systems in the mining and feasibility studies, maintaining robust HSE practices
  • The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Mining Engineer Degree or similar qualification
  • Project Management professional
  • 10 years + underground mine management experience, ideally with ramp up or operational readiness leadership
  • Exposure to Australian or New Zealand mining regulations highly desirable
  • Long term involvement in a leadership position in a Project Management or Major Project Study role highly desirable
  • Experience in underground mining equipment selection studies highly desirable
  • Recent experience in underground decline development desirable
  • Proven capability in managing specialised contractors and consultants across multiple work fronts
