What you will do

In this exciting relationship focused role situated within NZDF’s Defence Estate and Infrastructure unit you will support a range of strategic, operational and investment objectives within high-value programmes of work.

As the Planning Officer you will:

  • Lead a diverse array of capital investment projects through the development, design and planning phases;  
  • Translate your robust analysis of business needs into requirements and pragmatic business solutions;    
  • Develop influential business cases to ensure strategic and operational objectives and sound investment decisions can be made;
  • Manage consultancy contracts and exemplify project management expertise; 
  • Identify and actively manage project risks and issues; 
  • Prepare regular reporting for governance and other key project stakeholders.

What we need

We’re looking for a positive, pragmatic and motivated person with a working background in project planning in either military, infrastructure, construction, and/or related engineering fields.

Ideally you will have the following skills and experience:

  • A critical thinker with the ability to influence others;
  • Great organisational and multi-tasking skills; 
  • A professional and effective communication style, both written and verbal;
  • An applied understanding of public sector procedures;
  • Demonstrated experience working on complex projects;
  • A collaborative team member who can make quick and informed decisions;
  • Relevant tertiary, project management and Better Business Case qualifications as well as industry experience.

NZDF is undertaking a major regeneration programme developing the Defence Estate in order to achieve our overarching aim of delivering an integrated Defence Force. The Defence Estate is where our personnel live, work and train and comprises of 81,000ha of land, property and infrastructure assets valued at $4.7bn.

  • Most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided in this country continuously for at least the last ten (10) years, OR

  • Is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one of more of the following countries for the last ten (10) years; either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
