 Are you an active and passionate conservation practitioner, a strategic thinker, experienced in working with ecological data? Do you also have lots of practical skills and enjoy working in a small team? If yes then this job might be for you.

 

We have a rare and exciting vacancy in our Operations team based in St Arnaud, Nelson Lakes National Park. We need a proven and effective team player who is experienced in working with New Zealand’s native and pest fauna, in this special part of the country. This is a permanent and full time role.

 

As a key member of our small tight knit team you will help to plan and deliver;

  • Landscape-scale pest control and monitoring of mustelids, possums, cats, rodents ungulates, and wasps as part of the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project
  • Monitoring and protection of kea, kaka, kiwi, whio, bats, lizards and snails in Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi National Parks.
  • Day-to-day mentoring and leading field teams
  • Compliance and emergency work to support the wider functions of the team, including some weekend work

 

The successful applicant will ideally be ready to hit the ground running, with:

  • Strong, proven experience with animal pest control operations and threatened fauna management projects in New Zealand
  • Experience in leading field teams
  • Preferably a tertiary qualification in an ecological science
  • Experience with using R, GIS mapping programmes and MS word/excel
  • Recent backcountry experience
  • A current first aid certificate and full driver’s licence
  • A firearms license
  • Boat skippering experience
  • The ability to work well alone or in a diverse and highly productive team
  • The ability to stay away from home when required
  • Excellent fitness and ability to carry a 10kg pack all day on steep terrain.

 

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
