An exciting opportunity exists for an enthusiastic individual to join a fun, friendly, dedicated team working on delivering the Department of Conservation’s marine conservation goals, in particular seeking options to address the risk from fisheries bycatch.
There are a number of exciting and challenging programmes underway across New Zealand which seek to protect and recover threatened marine species. The Marine Species Team (MST) plays a central role within much of this work, either advising on, supporting or implementing conservation projects. Priority is given to the protected marine species (as defined under the Wildlife Act 1953 and Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978).
Current conservation projects encompass some of the world’s rarest animals, such as the Maui dolphin, as well as a range of endangered seabirds, fish and corals. Many of these projects attract significant public and media attention.
In this role, you will be expected to work cross a diverse range of marine conservation issues through the year, but your prime focus will be the monitoring and mitigating of fisheries impacts on marine species through the Conservation Services Programme (CSP):https://www.doc.govt.nz/our-work/conservation-services-programme/

You will join a small team working on some challenging, high-profile issues. There will be opportunities for personal and professional development. Some travel around New Zealand, and very occasionally, for travel overseas, is expected.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
