Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The Senior Adviser / Adviser fixed term positions will provide expertise to design and implement initiatives within the Live Animal Exports Work Programme.  These positions will focus on delivering continuous improvements, particularly in livestock carriage by sea.

The role will be providing technical advice and inputting into processes and requirements which underpin the live animal exports systems. In this role you will need to work collaboratively across MPI and engage effectively with exporters and associated organisations.  Animal export issues can be complex, you will need to exercise good judgement and have practical problem-solving skills when working within this regulatory environment.  

To be successful in this role you will have the following skills and attributes:

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject or veterinary qualification
  • Experience in an animal or animal welfare related field
  • Broad knowledge of the New Zealand regulatory environment, Animal Products Act and Animal Welfare Act 1999
  • Experience in managing relationships and consultation with an assortment of internal and external stakeholders
  • Well-developed research and analytical skills
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Self-motivated with good organisational skills, able to set priorities and meet deadlines

The Animal Exports team sits in the Animal Health & Welfare Directorate of the Agriculture and Investment Services Branch of the Ministry for Primary Industries. The Animal Exports team is responsible for developing and reviewing export standards for live animals, ensuring that zoosanitary certification meets the import conditions agreed between MPI and the competent authority of the importing country.  The team also manage approvals of Animal Welfare Export Certificates for livestock shipments and liaise with export stakeholders.

The senior adviser role is broad banded over Band E and Band D with an indicative salary range of $75,758 to $108,321 depending on skill set and experience.

The adviser role is board banded over Band G and Band F with an indicative salary range of $57,425 to $77,778 depending on skill set and experience.
