  • Division:
  • Summary:
  • Enjoy interesting, varied and challenging work!
  • Make a real contribution to the design of New Zealand’s transport regulatory system
  • Want to work with an engaged and forward-thinking team?

It’s not every day a role comes along that allows you to help shape New Zealand’s future. But as a Senior Adviser in the Ministry of Transport’s Economic Regulation policy team providing advice on aviation and maritime matters, that’s exactly what you’ll have the opportunity to do. Transport affects every area of our society and we need to think in broad terms.

The Economic Regulation team provides advice and develops rules and regulations to support the movement of goods and people by air and sea to where they want to go, both in New Zealand and abroad. The team explores the role that aviation and maritime transport play in a multi-modal system and helps put in place maritime and aviation legislation, rules and regulations that promote safety and future proof the system.

The role

As a Senior Policy Adviser, you will be responsible for leading the provision of high quality analysis and advice on Government policy issues and supporting the delivery of its work programme, including contribution to stakeholder relationships, projects, and processes; and representing the Ministry effectively while working with others across Government and with the wider sector.

In the role you will also:

  • Work with Crown agencies to ensure that civil aviation and maritime rules remain fit-for-purpose and, where appropriate, in harmony with international developments
  • Manage regulatory functions such as airline licencing, authorising non-scheduled international flights and approving airline cooperative agreements
  • Respond professionally and comprehensively to requests from the public and Ministers.

As a Senior Adviser at the Ministry of Transport you will have the opportunity to develop your policy craft and leadership skills in a supportive environment. You will lead policy projects, mentor and coach others, within the team, wider ministry and other sector agencies and stakeholders.

About you

You will need to be able to demonstrate strong analytical skills and your ability to deal with complex and ambiguous issues, and have the ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally. We are looking for someone who is able to collaborate with others to achieve results.

As well as holding a relevant tertiary qualification, in a discipline relevant to policy, economics or regulation, experience working on aviation issues or in an international setting would be a bonus. You will be a confident, articulate communicator with experience working across sector agencies and with a diverse range of stakeholders, senior leaders and ministers.

What we offer

If you’re looking to broaden your policy experience in a supportive environment, then the Ministry of Transport is the place for you. This role provides a lot of scope to be creative in how we address transport challenges. You will be expected to take ownership of your role and will be well supported not only within the team but across the Ministry.

The salary range for the role is $93,956 – $132,643, depending on relevant experience.

This is a permanent position and we are looking for the right candidate to join this energetic, motivated Ministry and make a contribution to New Zealand society, now and in the future. Please review the position description for more information and for specific queries, contact Tom Forster on 022 066 3875.

You must have the right to live and work in New Zealand to apply for these roles at the Ministry of Transport.

Please submit your application online including a cover letter and CV by Sunday 17th January.
