  • Keen on working with new and innovative information sources and tools that will enhance MPI’s intelligence capability?

About MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is responsible for ‘Growing and Protecting New Zealand’. It’s no mean feat and we have a team of hard working and dedicated people in a variety of roles supporting us to make this happen!

About our team

The Business Technology and Information Services Directorate is part of the Corporate Services Branch within MPI. BTIS’s vision is ‘making business easier and better’ and our horizons remain to ensure we deliver to business outcomes as outlined in MPI’s Information Technology Strategy.

To achieve our vision, BTIS has to be an exceptional service provider, a highly effective team, a creative innovator, change enabler and a responsive integrator between MPI, government, suppliers and industry.

The Information and Insights team is responsible for managing the Ministry’s core information and data, supporting and delivering analytic services, providing advice, and leading and championing the use of geospatial, unstructured, non-spatial and digital library information and data.

The Advisory team within Information and Insights brings together specialists from Information Management, Business Intelligence, and Geospatial backgrounds. We provide a service which draws together all these skills and types of data to support a fast paced diverse Ministry which spans both operational, policy and strategic activities. Teams throughout the Ministry use information and data in their day to day work; and seek our advice about what is possible, how to build processes which use information and data effectively, what would be appropriate ways to manage and store content, as well as looking for innovative tips and tricks for how to bring about changes in their processes.

About the role

This role primarily provides advice about the sourcing, access and use of information and data from both inside and outside the Ministry to the newly established Biosecurity Intelligence Team. The work ranges from providing advice about how an insight led approach could improve the quality of intelligence products that are delivered to decision makers; to supporting  the sourcing, use and management of new information; and also supporting staff who want to know what information or data may be available to them to help detect and forecast trends in pest and disease threats.  This is an opportunity to provide fresh thinking and trial new ways of using information and data. The role is also responsible for developing and sharing frameworks, approaches and standards, and for coaching and supporting advisers within the Business Technology and Information Services Advisory team.

About you

You have an analytics, business intelligence or similar background with experience delivering innovative advisory services. You will:

  • be an enthusiastic, confident and influential communicator with excellent relationship management skills;
  • be able to deal with flexibility and ambiguity;
  • enjoy working as part of a multi-disciplinary team prepared to try new things; and
  • understand the legislation and requirements for the sourcing, access and use of information and data.

As this role is to support the biosecurity intelligence team, an understanding of data and issues relating to science or intelligence will be an advantage.
