Senior Adviser Operational Research – Food Science & Risk Assessment – New Zealand Food Safety

We’re looking for a Senior Adviser to join our Operational Research team within the Food Science & Risk Assessment Directorate. This is a full time, permanent position based in our Wellington City office.

The Operational Research team sits within the New Zealand Food Safety Business Unit in MPI. Our team is responsible for the delivery and management of the MPI Operational Research Programme. The Operational Research Programme supports scientific research related to food safety, biosecurity and animal welfare. All research must produce high quality science based outcomes that can be used to improve MPI’s decision making and risk mitigation.


About the Role | Kōrero mō te tūranga

Every day is different! The role will involve working on a wide variety of projects across the business unit ensuring high quality scientific outcomes for MPI.  You will be the technical adviser in the team and your leadership combined with your ability to build and maintain an array of stakeholder relationships will ensure the technical delivery of the MPI Operational Research Programme. Currently the role has a focus on delivering science work led by MPI related to mānuka honey.


Skills & Experience | Ngā Pūkenga me ngā Wheako

The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree (ideally to a postgraduate level) in agriculture, food or biological sciences or a related discipline
  • Experience working on diverse scientific projects
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written with the ability to communicate to a wide variety of stakeholders – including internal and external audiences
  • Strong stakeholder management skills
  • The ability to adapt to the changing needs of the Operational Research Programme and can shift focus to a different area of expertise
  • Experience providing technical leadership and review of high priority research programmes and projects.
  • Ideally, experience in apiculture science (bee heath and/or bee product authentication)

Salary range for this role is $91,162 – $107,249 depending on skills and experience
