Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the Role

The Aquatic and Environment Health Team (Biosecurity Surveillance and Incursion Investigation) is looking for a Senior Adviser – Surveillance / Incursion Investigation (Aquatic Animal Health) with post-graduate qualifications and science-based experience in Aquatic Animal Health (e.g. science, epidemiology, biosecurity) to join our team. This is an exciting role that gives you the opportunity to work on the front line of aquatic investigations and liaise with the public to protect our waters and also to play a key role in developing Biosecurity New Zealand’s aquatic animal health surveillance programme.

  • Provide specialist scientific/technical advice to Biosecurity New Zealand, and to other agencies, industry and stakeholders
  • Build and maintain positive and co-operative relationships
  • Identify areas for improvement
  • Reporting on marine surveillance
  • Represent MPI in advisory groups and steering committees
  • Communicate with authorities both nationally and internationally


Mōu – About You

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary group of trusted specialists with varying backgrounds, who all share a passion for biosecurity, surveillance and operational excellence.

  • A tertiary qualification in aquatic animal health/marine sciences or equivalent
  • Relevant technical/professional experience in aquatic animal health/marine sciences
  • Project planning and management skills
  • Data management/analysis/process development experience

Salary range for this role is $91,000 to $107,000 depending on skills and experience

  • most preferably a NZ citizen, who has resided continuously in NZ for at least the last five (5) years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last five (5) years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, the United Kingdom (UK) or the United States of America (USA); and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at this level.
