The Health Workforce Directorate exists for one reason only: to support the delivery of excellent healthcare to the patients and public of New Zealand by ensuring that the workforce of today and tomorrow has the right numbers, skills, values and behaviours, at the right time and in the right place.

About the opportunity 

This is a fantastic time to join the enthusiastic and collaborative Health Workforce directorate.  


You will develop and provide policy advice on assessing the case for regulating new and existing health professions. You will also be responsible for ensuring the Ministry continues to meet its obligations under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, and for monitoring certain aspects or Responsible Authority performance. You will work closely with our Principal Advisor as key players at the interface between the Ministry and Responsible Authorities.  


You will build strong working relationships with the Responsible Authorities, colleagues across the Ministry, and other agencies. This will enable you to provide high quality advice to Ministers, the Senior Leadership Team, and other key stakeholders.  


You will care about the New Zealand health system and you will want to be part of ensuring that we continue to meet our objective of providing the safest care and best outcomes for our population through providing strategic oversight and sector leadership for New Zealand’s health workforce. 


About you 

The role requires a high level of competency in the following areas: 

  • An appropriate tertiary-level professional qualification and/or significant relevant work experience.  
  • Experience of the New Zealand health system. 
  • Knowledge of the HPCA Act and experience with professional regulation within the health sector is desirable. 
  • Good working knowledge of the machinery of government 
  • Strong stakeholder management coupled with enthusiasm and a resilience to respond to the challenges of the work.
