  • Maritime New Zealand is the regulatory compliance and response agency for the safety, security and environmental protection of New Zealand’s coastal and inland waterways. It helps to develop and maintain the national safety, security and environmental protection regulations that govern the operation of vessels, ports and offshore installations in New Zealand waters.

    About the team:
Maritime Systems Assurance (MSA) provides high quality technical advice and assurance to internal and external stakeholders regarding international, domestic, maritime, environmental, port and harbour sector issues. MSA also provides oversight of sector participants, strategic liaison with sector groups, and assurance to the Director of Maritime New Zealand that maritime and environmental regulatory and compliance systems are effective.

This position reports to the Manager Nautical and Technical Systems Assurance.

    About the role:
The Senior Advisor (Technical) fixed-term role until June 2022 is pivotal in providing specialist technical advice, expertise and analysis to support our maritime and marine environmental protection functions including supporting teams through the provision of advice on policy development, enforcement, and application processing. The role also includes assisting in the development of guidance and advisory material, and in the implementation of maritime rules and the undertaking of projects related to assurance of maritime systems. While the role provides support to Maritime NZ teams on a range of technical issues, the successful applicant will need to demonstrate experience in electrical systems (preferably on vessels) and the ability to understand current design standards and principles for large electrical and battery installations.

The key to your success in this role will be your professional interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. We need someone who has the confidence and ability to engage with people from fishermen to Government Ministers; someone who can also hold themselves well when under the spotlight (during an incident response for example); and someone who earns respect, and seeks to build other’s understanding to influence people.

The successful candidate will need to have a current and clean Driver Licence and be available to travel within NZ.

    Application process:
If you have the background we need, the motivation and passion, and an ability to engage and deliver then this could be your next opportunity. Joining Maritime New Zealand will offer you development opportunities and a chance to join an organisation that is dedicated to making our seas safe, clean and secure.

If you believe you have the skills and experience we are looking for, please review the Position Description and apply via the Maritime New Zealand’s Careers Page.
