What you will do

The Knowledge and Information Management Directorate (KIMD) is leading the design and delivery of a complex enterprise analytics systems for an organisation that performs all the functions of a small country, for the purpose of keeping New Zealand safe and secure.

We’re creating a new team of data management and analytics specialists to design and deliver the New Zealand Defence Force’s (NZDF) enterprise analytics system (including people, processes, practices, and technologies) to improve our strategic, operational and tactical decision making. 

As a Senior Analyst you will:

  • Contribute technical leadership to the planning, development, and implementation of an enterprise approach to data management and analytics;
  • Provide best practice technical data management and analytics subject matter expertise for information management related initiatives;
  • Be an integral member of the data management and analytics community and a trusted advisor on how to improve data quality and mature data management and analytics practices;
  • Provide coaching and training to support the maturing of our people’s information management capability;
  • Together, the team will ensure that the NZDF has confidence in its data and information as a trusted source and will enable decisions to be information-led so that we can exploit opportunities, prioritise resources, and resolve trade-offs.

What we need

We are looking for a coding wizard (e.g. R, Python, SQL) with experience in data management, modelling and analysis.  You will be familiar with how to utilise analytical tools to produce fit for purpose outputs that deliver organisational benefit. You may have some knowledge of Azure or AWS.

However you are ready to move beyond roles that are focused on your technical expertise and want to explore and develop other facets of your professional skill set.

You conceptually understand the different elements required for an enterprise analytics system and are excited to participate as a subject matter expert within delivery teams, and are looking for opportunities to lead the delivery of components using agile and iterative approaches. You appreciate the need to put the user at the centre of everything you do and may be familiar with user experience design concepts, methodologies and tools.

You’re passionate about engaging with colleagues across the organisation and can use your analytical or research background to help them frame great questions and utilise the power of data and analytics to find the answer.  Explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences with diverse roles and positions in organisations is something that is comfortable for you.

Higher level Security Clearance

  • most preferably a NZ citizen who has resided continuously in this country for the last 10 years, OR
  • is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: either Australia, Canada, NZ, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
