  • Summary:

Ministry for the Environment

Here at the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) we value our people and we love to do things differently. Our people are from diverse backgrounds and work in flexible ways. We are all committed to our responsibility as primary advisors to the Government on the environment.

We tackle the most critical issues that impact on our environment, supporting New Zealand to become the most liveable place in the world.

The position

We are looking for both a Senior Policy Analyst and a Senior Analyst to join our Strategy and Stewardship Division.

The Strategy and Stewardship division aims to strengthen the evidence base used to inform decisions – helping New Zealanders to put the environment at the center of those decisions. We want to strengthen our evidence base so it reflects what matters to New Zealanders, to help inform the decisions we all have to take. We gather knowledge, we build insights from it and we translate it so others can make use of it.

This is an exciting time to join us: we are working with others to enhance New Zealand’s environmental monitoring and reporting system. With the scale of environmental challenges increasingly apparent, there is a fundamental need to ensure our data and science system is fit for purpose and we understand the impacts of our decisions. Our work is outward facing and looks wider than the Ministry – considering the shifts needed across the environmental science and data system, including what we monitor and report on in New Zealand and how we partner with others to make progress.

We have two full-time permanent positions for innovative, positive and adaptable people with the skills to work at the science policy interface. Namely a:

  • Senior Policy Analyst – you will provide policy advice on the environmental monitoring and reporting system, in collaboration with system partners. In addition to being an excellent communicator with experience in policy development, you will have the ability to incorporate scientific knowledge into your advice.
  • Senior Analyst – you will work with policy teams to understand the role and need for science and evidence to underpin credible policy. Working alongside our scientists you will translate key policy questions. In addition to being an excellent communicator, you will have worked at the interface between science and policy, and can translate the needs of both. You will have a strong science expertise and knowledge of the science system in New Zealand would be advantageous.

Please specify in your cover letter which of these two roles you are interested in.

Do you have what it takes?

We are looking for people who can bring some of the following to our diverse talent pool:

  • analytical skills and strong written and oral communication skills
  • excellent communication skills and the ability to cultivate relationships and partnerships that bring different perspectives to our work
  • innovative thinking – an ability to bring fresh thinking and receptive to other ideas and ways of working
  • a focus on action – an ability and comfort to cut through complexity or ambiguity to meet goals, changing priorities and new emerging issues
  • significant drive to continually grow and develop both yourself and those around you.

We are looking for candidates with relevant academic qualifications. Please also highlight if you have particular knowledge or experience related to working at the science policy interface, current knowledge of the environmental monitoring and/or reporting system, and/or Te Ao Māori (Māori worldview).

Your experience

Here at MfE, Senior Policy Analysts/Senior Analysts typically bring a minimum of five years of relevant work experience.  Working in a team environment, you will need the ability to lead projects and to mentor and coach junior staff. You will ideally have experience with government and policy processes and regulation, or the application of science in a regulatory setting.

Additionally, experience building relationships with iwi/Māori or understanding of Te Ao Māori (Māori worldview) would be beneficial, but this is not mandatory and should not stop you from applying.

Benefits

As well as being part of an innovative organisation with an important purpose of making Aotearoa, New Zealand, the most liveable place in the world, we offer you:

  • A flexible by default approach to support your work-life balance
  • Agile working, allowing you variety and challenges across the organisation as we work as ‘One MfE’
  • Generous leave entitlements
  • Te Reo Maori language courses (and te Reo Maori competency allowance)
  • An active social club and employee networks
  • Opportunities for development and education
