Senior Data Engineer – Business Technology and Information Services

The Information and Insights team is responsible for managing the Ministry’s core information and data, supporting and delivering analytic services, providing advice, and leading and championing the use of geospatial, unstructured, non-spatial and digital library information and data as well as legacy physical and digital information..
The Core Information and Data team within Information and Insights works across all information and data management disciplines within MPI. They develop the key information and data standards; build the structures which hold our information and data; prepare, migrate and transform information and data; and manage its lifecycle.
Within Core Information and Data there are teams responsible for information and data architecture, data engineering and information lifecycle management.
About the role
This role has been created within the data engineering team. The team’s tasks include preparing data for analytical or operational uses and include building data pipelines to pull together information from different source systems (internal and external), integrating, consolidating and structuring it for use in various systems. This role has a focus on data used to monitor New Zealand’s fisheries. The Data Engineers are responsible for defining and designing the data structures which hold the Ministry’s data. They work with the business to understand the datasets and the analytic and business needs.
This role will focus on the data needs of the fisheries digital monitoring function within MPI. Digital monitoring provides verifiable, accurate, integrated and timely information on commercial fishing activities that will support the goals of the Future of Our Fisheries programme to strengthen the fisheries management system and to ensure the sustainability of New Zealand’s fisheries.
You will have a qualification or comparable experience in a field strongly aligned with data engineering and the management of information and data with strong experience delivering data engineering services. You are comfortable in managing customer-facing roles liaising with all levels of management and staff. You will have an understanding of the management of information and data within the New Zealand government context and an understanding of the use and value of structured spatial and non-spatial data.
As this role is to support the fisheries digital monitoring team, an understanding of data and issues relating to fisheries and maritime will be an advantage.
