What you will do 

As the Senior Governance Advisor, you will provide expert governance advice, analysis and monitoring to enable efficient and effective NZDF governance systems, policies, processes and controls. You will be working across the Integration, Delivery and Governance Team and with other key stakeholders within NZDF. 

You will be responsible for: 

  • Delivering direct secretariat support to the Chairs and members of strategic governance bodies;
  • Providing professional advice and guidance to senior managers on the policies and operations of governance activities, and the maintenance of governance terms of reference and processes;
  • Ensuring there is an integrated approach to governance, performance and risk management, planning and strategy development and execution; and
  • Supporting and deputising for the Principal Governance Advisor.

What we need

This role requires sound understanding of governance within the public sector at a senior level.  You will have an ability to think methodically, establish and maintain sound processes and systems, and respond quickly to complex issues. You will be adaptable and flexible to meet changing needs. 

You must also have:

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills for all levels and complexities;
  • Political savvy with the ability to work with ease in the internal political environment;
  • Proactive and effective management skills for internal and external relationships, conscious of organisational reputation; and
  • A high degree of sensitivity with the ability to liaise with confidence and influence personnel at all levels.

The Governance Team’s mission is to improve strategic level decision making within NZDF by providing high quality support and advice to the senior governance committees. The Governance Team sits within the Defence Strategy Management Unit which is responsible for driving the execution of NZDF’s strategy.
