Senior Inquiries Specialist

The Office of the Auditor-General | Te Mana Arotake(the Office) is focused on significantly enhancing its influence and impact on the public sector to deliver better results for Aotearoa New Zealand. The Office expects to deliver more outputs, and we want our work to have greater impact.

We are expanding our Inquiries team, which is part of the Legal, Policy, and Inquiries Group and carries out inquiry work on behalf of the Auditor-General. Inquiries work takes an independent, in-depth look at concerns in the public sector and at situations where something might have gone wrong or where money and resources might have been misused. The Auditor-General can carry out an inquiry on his own initiative or on request from a member of the public, a public sector employee, a member of Parliament, or another organisation. We do this work to understand what has happened and provide any lessons for improvement. Examples might include concerns about financial impropriety, conflicts of interest, or governance and management.

We are looking for a Senior Inquiries Specialist to be part of the team. The Senior Inquiries Specialist will be involved in carrying out inquiry work under the Public Audit Act 2001, taking responsibility for cases and leading larger prices of work, providing guidance to members of the inquiries team and other parts of the Office, being responsible for certain parts of the team’s processes, assessing whether inquiries are warranted and making recommendations, gathering information, analysing evidence, preparing reports and other outputs, meeting and discussing issues with staff of public organisations at all levels (including senior leadership), and dealing with wide range of issues, entities, and people. Our inquiries work can often be about complex, high profile matters, and examples of our work can be seen at

A tertiary qualification in law, accounting, or other relevant discipline and some significant post-qualification experience, preferably in the public sector (including central and local government), is essential for this position.

Although this is a permanent role, we are open to a secondment.

Our benefits

  • Learning and development opportunities.
  • Flexible working.
  • A unique operating environment with Parliament.
