The Ministry of Primary industries (MPI) provides a range of services to ensure New Zealand is protected from Biological risk and that the food New Zealand businesses produce is safe and suitable for us all to consume and our natural resources are sustainable.

A 2 year fixed term contract has become available within the Immunology team at the animal health laboratory based in Wallaceville, Wellington.  This is a crucial role and we are seeking applications from those who are wanting to be part of a highly dedicated team working to protect our country and its resources.

The Specimen Reception area is a key area in the operation of the animal health laboratory. The purpose of the Laboratory Technical officer – Specimen reception is to support the Laboratory functions, thus facilitating timely processing and testing of samples.

Key focus areas:

  • Contribute to the effective operating of Specimen Reception in meeting the demands of the Laboratory including
    • Receiving and accessioning samples
    • Accurately capturing data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
    • Distributing samples to the Laboratory teams
    • Receiving inwards goods
    • Facilitating sub contracted testing of samples to laboratories both national and internationally
  • Dealing with external and internal customers that relate to laboratory testing
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant acts, standards, procedures and documentation relating the Specimen Reception activities
  • Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement of the specimen reception processes and procedures.

To be successful, candidates will need to demonstrate:

  • minimum BSc, MSc qualification or equivalent
  • Experience working in a diagnostic Laboratory
  • Proven planning, coordination, organising, team work and leadership skills
  • Excellent communication skills (Verbal and Written)
  • Highly effective customer relationship and management skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Good and timely record keeping
  • Ability to keep calm under pressure
