The Safety, Health and Environment (SH&E) Group exists to radically improve the road safety, workplace health and safety and environmental performance of the New Zealand land transport system.

The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

Reporting to the General Manager, Safety Health and Environment, you will be responsible for embedding best practice expectations across the Agency by leading and managing our critical risk.

In this role, you will use your strong leadership experience and influencing skills to grow the relationship with our contractor and industry groups to further place us as a leader in setting the standard in construction safety. You will develop initiatives and manage the interface between delivery partners by engaging in regular interventions with industry groups and other stakeholders while you work to deliver a reduction in overall critical risk by monitoring and managing risk in our contracted sites and projects while you work collaboratively with our partners and alliances.

We are a diverse team so it is essential that you are a people-centric person with sound interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong rapport and positive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders. Your experience in leading a team and influencing and negotiating with senior and executive level stakeholders is essential. You will need to bring a focus on collaboration, customer focus and well-honed curiosity to the Agency.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Strong leadership experience in workplace health, safety and wellness, ideally in a transport or government environment
  • Experience in working across central and local government
  • Demonstrated experience in leading, influencing and building credibility across a range of stakeholders
  • A growth mindset and collaborative working style
  • A strong customer-focus
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Tertiary level Health and Safety qualification (minimum IOSH Diploma), preferably at post-graduate level
