Crown Law – Te Tari Ture o te Karauna

A busy and varied role combining policy expertise and operational influence.

We are seeking a versatile and experienced Senior Policy Advisor to lead Crown Law’s small but crucial policy function.

As our sole policy advisor, you will support Crown Law’s contribution to the development of policy proposals affecting the role of the Attorney-General, Solicitor-General or Crown Law, including criminal justice policy and matters affecting the judiciary, the operation of the courts, charitable trusts and other law officer functions. While focused on the justice sector, your role can include engagement with the Law Commission, Cabinet Office, Parliamentary Counsel Office and other departments.

Given the varied nature of the role, in any week you could be:

  • briefing the Attorney-General
  • managing and co-ordinating a review of the Solicitor-General’s prosecution guidelines
  • supporting consultation with Crown Solicitors
  • planning an internal policy work programme
  • reporting to the Leadership team
  • representing Crown Law in Justice sector governance groups or working groups
  • updating Crown Law’s policy on the proactive release of official information
  • working on Crown Law’s annual report
  • reviewing private members bills for implications for the rights and prerogatives of the Crown.

Is this you?

The role requires you to work effectively across the organisation, exercising sound judgement and initiative. It offers the opportunity to have influence at a senior level. You will bring excellent policy skills and are able to build on your relationships across government and lead interesting projects.

The role will appeal if you are a self-starter with a strong interest in Justice policy and a desire to work in a legal environment with an interesting constitutional role.

Ideally you will have:

  • a tertiary qualification in public policy or law
  • relevant experience, preferably in criminal justice practice or policy
  • initiative, sound judgement and the ability to work independently
  • exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • experience engaging with internal and external stakeholders and the ability to build strong relationships.
