Mō tō mātou rōpū & Kōrero mō te tūranga – About our team & and about the role

The Animal Sector policy team works across New Zealand’s animal-based primary sectors, including meat, dairy, and wool, as well as newer and more niche industries. We work with stakeholders and government agencies to develop and implement policy initiatives to address complex problems. This includes legislative and regulatory frameworks that balance cooperation and competition to support dynamic efficiency, growth and development in the primary sectors. We also play a key role in MPI’s response to COVID-19, working with businesses, industry organisations and across government to minimise the impact of COVID-19 restrictions and disruptions on primary industry business operations.

We are looking for two senior policy analysts until June 2021 to work on a new project, which aims to remove barriers to the export of New Zealand primary products via e-commerce, while balancing this against risks to New Zealand’s regulatory systems and trading reputation. The project will work at speed to identify the highest priority areas for change, and get that change underway within the next six months.

We are an exciting, vibrant and fast-moving place to work and we are looking for someone who’ll thrive in this environment.

Ko te tangata mo tēnei tūranga? – Who are we looking for?

We need smart, curious, and enthusiastic people who are able to contribute to our work on complex policy issues. To be successful in this role you need:

  • The ability to identify and clearly communicate core elements of an issue or proposal;
  • Broad perspective and ability to make creative and informed connections between commercial, environmental and social issues;
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to effectively engage and collaborate with a wide range of people across government and the primary industries;
  • Understanding of government policy processes; and
  • The ability to manage your effort to deliver work to a high standard and on time, both independently and with the support of others.
