About ESR

ESR is a Crown Research Institute, working with and for clients and stakeholders in central and local government, industry organisations and the private sector to deliver enhanced scientific research services for the economic, environmental and social wellbeing of New Zealand. ESR has approximately 400 staff with sites in Auckland, Christchurch, Upper Hutt, and Porirua.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a water senior scientist to join our Surface Water team.

We are seeking an enthusiastic senior scientist who is able to demonstrate experience and knowledge in water molecular microbiology. You will be responsible for project design, performing laboratory experiments and field work.

The applicant will contribute to the planning, execution and reporting of research and development projects that investigate and respond to microbial indicators and pathogens in surface water and drinking water. You will develop new research projects and work with a range of clients to better understand microbial threats to our water. You will also be responsible for strengthening our interactions with industry and local and central government stakeholders and you must therefore have good communication and interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate will have a relevant tertiary qualification, a minimum of BSc in microbiology or equivalent field, and ideally experience in both research and consultancy. Some domestic travel is a requirement for this position.

An interest in participating in ESR’s outreach programme and communicate science to non-specialist audiences such as community groups and schools would be an advantage.

In addition, the preferred applicant will ideally have most or all of the following capabilities:

  • can work independently
  • provide strategic scientific leadership
  • experience with client or stakeholder interactions
  • financial acumen for leading research projects
  • cultural awareness
  • a team player

A pre-employment drug-screen, disclosure of criminal charges/convictions, are conditions of employment for this position.
