What you will do
The Youth Development Unit (YDU) Headquarters Senior Social Worker is responsible for the provision of education, policy advice and training for Youth Development Staff and other personnel in psycho-education and consultation.
The role will provide policy development and research aimed at prevention and early intervention for complex mental health and psycho-social issues. You will also provide the functions of a consultant manager and internal supervisor for YDU social workers that are based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. There is a diverse range of key activities in this role from management, research, clinical services to policy development.
What we need
You must be a NZ registered social worker with at least eight years practice and experience in social work, as an independent practitioner and related fields. In addition to this you will need to have proven experience of working with youth.
As an experienced social worker you will understand the need to develop collaborative working relationships across the organisation. Being able to interact confidently and professionally is essential in this role as you will work across a diverse range of people and offer guidance and support to military Command.
Being quite an autonomous role you are happy to work independently while contributing to the wider YDU unit and team. Knowledge of assessment and intervention regarding youth and adult mental health, psycho-social difficulties and offending is highly desirable.
Please note: There is an on call component to this role.
Who we are
The Youth Development Unit (YDU) is responsible for providing support to the NZDF for the provision of training to selected elements of New Zealand’s youth, these being Limited Services Volunteer (LSV), and Youth Life Skills (YLS) Schemes.
The YDU works with young people by conducting several different programmes all designed to enable them to progress into job placement, trade training, further education and engagement in local communities.
The YDU Headquarters provides direction and guidance on all command, policy, training, logistics, financial and administrative aspects relating to the conduct of YDU operations to the YDU sub-units responsible for the delivery of YDU outputs.

The YDU(N) is responsible for providing support to the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) output 4.5 support to the community through the provision of training to selected elements of New Zealand’s youth, these being Limited Services Volunteer (LSV), and Youth Life Skills (YLS) schemes. A New Zealand Defence Force Unit (Navy, Army, Air Force, and Civilian) with sub units based in Burnham, Trentham and Auckland and a HQ located at Burnham Camp.
