We are seeking an experienced Senior Linux Systems Engineer with containerisation, cloud and automation skills to join our IT Operations Team in Wellington. You will be joining a highly skilled team of engineers and IT professionals that owns the delivery of the IT services to both internal and external customers. The IT Operations team develops, delivers, and supports technology solutions that are as unique as the original requirements.
NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand’s aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. NIWA is New Zealand’s largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science. NIWA’s in-house IT team develops, maintains, operates and supports an extensive and diverse mix of business and scientific systems; work that is both important and interesting.
You will be involved with the support of all NIWA IT infrastructure within New Zealand, including the systems situated on our two science vessels.
This senior role will specialise on the Linux based systems within NIWA where you will be using Linux systems in a range of interesting ways and have the opportunity to be involved with the people doing the science. We have a wide variety of systems including CentOS, SLES, Red Hat and Ubuntu. Experience with design and management of Kubernetes, Ansible, AWS and Azure cloud services is essential.
Experience with Puppet, Oracle WebLogic, and open source database technologies are all advantageous. Previous experience in the science IT sector is an advantage.
In addition to the Linux systems, you will be working with a wide range of other technologies including, but not limited to; Microsoft Server, Commvault, VMWare, Juniper network products, Fortigate firewalls, IBM SANs, HP Servers and Cloudflare.
Just as important as your technology skills is your ability to fit into an established team of talented engineers. You need to be able to bring a level of maturity gained from your experience but also the flexibility that will see you asking for assistance when you are working on unfamiliar systems.
If you have a Linux DevOps mindset with strong sysadmin, Kubernetes and cloud technology skills, are motivated, disciplined, reliable and enjoy learning, are a self-starter who can work with minimal supervision, have a strong customer service ethic and want to be part of a professional and progressive team, making an important contribution to NZ science, then this could be your next career move.
