Senior Technician (Radiation Safety)Full time/PermanentCHRISTCHURCHInstitute of Environmental Science and Research Ltd (ESR)About ESRESR is a Crown Research Institute, working with and for clients and stakeholders in central and local government, industry organisations and the private sector to deliver enhanced scientific research services for the economic, environmental and social wellbeing of New Zealand. ESR has approximately 400 staff with sites in Auckland, Christchurch, Upper Hutt, and Porirua.About the roleThis is a key role within the National Centre for Radiation Science, the main provider of radiation safety expertise within New Zealand. The key component of the role is performing radiation safety inspections of both medical and industrial facilities within New Zealand to monitor compliance with the Radiation Safety Legislation. This role requires extensive travel and time away from home. Full training will be provided.Duties and ResponsibilitiesSome of the key duties include:Performance of on-site radiation safety inspections of facilities throughout New Zealand, including planning, reporting writing and following up on actions arising from inspections.Providing assistance in the provision of radiation protection services provided by the NCRS including provision of training.Perform radiation surveys.Preparation of inspection packages.Calibration and management of radiation monitoring and technical equipment, as well as maintaining associated records.Data processing and handling. This will mostly involve summary data for the annual and other reports.Skills and ExperienceHolder a physics degree or relevant tertiary qualification in science.Hold a clean, current, full driving licence.Ability to carry out routine tasks in a consistent, orderly and timely fashion over an extended period.Excellent organisational and time management skills.Eye for detail to ensure accuracy in results and records.Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.A flexible approach to working hours as the workload is variable.Is self-motivated and can work independently and as part of a team.Good computer skills, particularly in the use of the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Able to travel for extended periods of time.Will be required to undergo security clearance to be appointed as Enforcement Officer.Ability to make sounds scientific judgement and be able to think on the spot.
