The Role and Opportunity

We are seeking a full-time Senior Technician/ Research Associate to join our Food Chemistry & Structure team at our AgResearch Grasslands campus in Palmerston North. This is an exciting opportunity to put your Analytical Chemistry experience into practice working across a wide variety of different projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the laboratory sample extraction of an array of sample types for analysis, along with the operation, training, and maintenance of several of the FCS Mass Spectrometers – including collecting data, troubleshooting, providing preliminary analysis and reporting of results to project managers. You will also assist with preparation of research proposals (primarily in assisting in cost estimations) along with providing supervision of staff and students using mass spectrometry instrumentation.

You will be responsible for providing high quality experimental data, analyses and reporting as part of various research projects and have the ability to independently conduct technical lab-based duties, while working as part of a wider collaborative team.

What you will be doing

• Collecting, evaluating and reporting on data and research information
• Coordinating resources and equipment as required
• Supporting and training other Technicians, Interns, Students and Visitors
• Assisting with instrumental analysis, troubleshooting & maintenance

Your ideal background

• A tertiary qualification (BSc or MSc) in a relevant Analytical Chemistry or similar discipline
• Demonstrated working experience in Mass Spectrometry
• Experience of working with a variety of sample extraction techniques and sample numbers would be advantageous
• A strong understanding of best practice health and safety
• High level of attention detail and the ability to deliver to predetermined outcomes
• Knowledge and interest in New Zealand agriculture and food industries
