Position Overview

Concept Design Senior Tutor

With a legacy of over a century in design education, Ngā Pae Māhutonga is recognised as an Asia-Pacific leader in higher education for design, producing world-class research and educating practitioners across a broad spectrum of design approaches. Ngā Pae Māhutonga educates students to be socially and culturally engaged global citizens, contributing to their communities with imaginative, collaborative, and unconventional approaches to some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today.

In 2020 the Wellington School of Design will launch a new major pathway in Concept Design. This new offering enables students to explore the act of visualisation employed for conceptualising, envisioning, and prototyping an idea for use in film, television, gaming, performance and interactive experiences. The major will launch with a core of courses focused upon drawing, prototyping and rigorous conceptual development of characters, environments, costumes and creatures. The appointee will support offerings within the undergraduate concept Design curricula, meeting critical standards and expectations for the discipline and the industry.

The successful candidate should possess strong world-building and conceptual design skills across a range of media including digital and physical, 2D and 3D ideation processes, and a proficiency to demonstrate practice based concept design process. Familiarity with contemporary design research methods/ethnography, design thinking practices, and progressive imaginative, educational and entrepreneurial conceptual design practices is encouraged.

Applicants should also possess a strong background in professional concept design practice, and teaching experience at undergraduate university levels would be beneficial.

The candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to service in the form of administration and committee participation, and will be required to take on different roles and responsibilities within the School of Design as needed. An open, collaborative approach and willingness to work across areas and departments of the school, college and university is a priority.
