About the team

The Inpatient Mental Health unit is a purpose built modern facility where care is provided by a multidisciplinary team with a broad range of experience. We work in close partnership with community teams, allied health care professionals and local education providers to facilitate a working environment that is supportive, challenging and reflects evidence of ongoing professional growth whilst meeting the needs of a diverse population with mental illness.

The geographic region we serve is unique and so we see a hugely varied caseload.

About the role/about you

In this Social Worker role, you’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team working to deliver a supportive service to our clients. You’ll work autonomously but will be well embedded in a team of equally dedicated mental health professionals.

We need you to be able to demonstrate your effective communication skills and your ability to think on your feet while exuding calmness under pressure. You’ll have an excellent set of skills – written and oral communication; needs assessment; networking; advocacy; and critical thinking. Plus you’ll have the ability to support and empower tangata whaiora and the family/whanau to reach their goals.

Ideally you’ll bring to this role experience working with people experiencing mental health illness, you will have exceptional communication skills, a non-judgemental attitude and a positive manner.

You must hold a professional social worker qualification (as per Social Worker Registration Board schedules for registration eligibility i.e. Bachelor’s degree equivalent) and be Registered and hold a current annual practicing certificate with Social Work Registration Board (SWRB) within three months of appointment. A current full driver’s licence is required.

If you’re seeking that elusive blend of time to do what you love in life, combined with your Social Work passion and the need to make a difference in the lives of our clients, then we believe joining our team might just tick all the boxes.

The location

From excellent shopping to lively cafés and friendly locals, Invercargill has all the benefits of city life with few of the drawbacks. New Zealand’s southernmost city is favourably placed on the Southern Scenic Route and is the gateway to some of the most beautiful scenery and destinations including the Southland heartland, Stewart Island, Fiordland and the Catlins, not to mention world class local attractions like Bill Richardson Transport World and Motorcycle Mecca.

If it’s time for you to take a break, try something a bit different, try another part of the world, (if you are not already here) have the opportunity to work, but also some time to relax, this might just be what you have been waiting for!
