As a Solicitor, you will provide legal advice across a range of business areas to support ACC’s important role in serving all New Zealanders.

As a Solicitor in ACC’s Corporate legal team, you will help protect the integrity of the ACC scheme, and help ensure its long-term financial stability. The team provides legal services across a variety of areas – in particular public law, contracting and procurement, and the Accident Compensation scheme itself. You will also provide support to ACC’s Litigation legal team, which is involved with dispute resolution and litigation at multiple levels. You will have the opportunity to work independently and under the supervision of other solicitors as necessary, and to customers at all levels within ACC.

This is a ‘generalist’ role where you can expect a stimulating mix of work.

Your focus will be on the following:

  • Public law work – including ACC’s public consultation on levy rates in 2021 and related legal requirements, supporting engagement with the Waitangi Tribunal, and advising on Official Information Act and Privacy Act matters.
  • Criminal/integrity services – operational advice to ongoing investigations including evidence assessment, attending evidential interviews, and drafting search warrant applications.
  • Coronial inquiries – including file assessment and preparation of reports on behalf of ACC.
  • Non-party disclosure applications – assisting the Court with disclosure applications in criminal prosecutions where ACC is a non party, including file assessment, and preparation of relevant evidence and memorandum to Court

The role will not undertake Court appearances but may include coordinating with and instructing external counsel as required.

What we are looking for from you to be successful in this role:

You will have the following:

  • Approximately five to six years’ post-admission experience, ideally in-house in a public sector environment, and a current practising certificate or the ability to hold one
  • Good knowledge of public law generally
  • Good knowledge of litigation practice and evidence assessment
  • An interest in learning about and applying the Accident Compensation Act and relevant regulations
  • Well-developed communication and problem-solving skills
  • Criminal law background and understanding of the search and surveillance legislation and investigatory techniques would be an advantage, but not essential
