The New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) is responsible for protecting New Zealand against threats to the border, facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods and collecting customs and excise revenue on behalf of the Crown.

 

About the team…

We are looking for a Senior Customs Officer (Grade 2) to join our Customs Surveillance Unit, which is part of the wider Technical Forensics Service. The successful applicant will already have successfully completed the Customs Surveillance Course (or equivalent).

Our Surveillance team are a group of highly motivated and well-trained officers. As a Surveillance officer, you will be working on operational activity that will require you to have the highest of standards when it comes to discretion.

 

About the role…

In this Senior Customs Officer position, you will be coaching and mentoring Customs Officers and providing support to other leaders. Excellent communication skills are essential as you will be dealing with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. As surveillance work is linked to serious offences, you will need to be proficient in understanding and applying legislation.  Additionally, you’ll planning and taking control in operational activity. You must be prepared and comfortable with making decisions and issuing commands to achieve operational and intelligence objectives, using your specialist knowledge to lead the team where required.

You will also be a key participant in projects, inspiring the rest of the team to contribute and make projects successful. At times, you’ll be leading project work and must feel confident in your abilities and also recognise where you can develop your skills further. You must also be willing to engage in further technical training, and you will be called on to assist as a coach on surveillance courses.

 

About you…

You will be providing specialised surveillance support for investigating a range of border related offences. You must be able to work calmly under pressure and be able to adapt to evolving situations, and an affinity with technology is also important. You will need to be able to follow operational instructions as well as have good decision making skills. 

 

To be considered for this position, you must:

  • Have successfully passed the Customs Surveillance Course (or equivalent course, such as the NZ Police or SIS/Military courses or international equivalents)
  • Have a full and unrestricted NZ driver’s licence
  • Be able to work ‘unpredictable hours’. This includes working outside of usual working hours, working extended hours, and being rostered to cover on-call periods.
  • Be available for deployment at short notice to any location nationally
  • Be capable of passing a formal driving skills assessment
  • Be able to pass a fitness test, drug test, and medical
  • Be able to obtain and maintain an organisational security clearance, and security clearance at a higher level*

(*) Only New Zealand citizens can be considered for this opportunity.

You must be able to obtain and maintain a high-level security clearance. Ordinarily to obtain this level of clearance candidates must have a 10 year checkable background in countries where meaningful and reliable checks can be undertaken. Where requisite checks are unable to be made, the candidate application may not be able to be progressed.
