About the Organisation and Branch

MPI’s purpose is to grow and protect New Zealand. The Operations Branch has a critical role in preventing harmful organisms crossing New Zealand’s borders. It manages border and compliance activities as well as preparing for and responding to biosecurity threats within New Zealand. In addition to screening cargo consignments for biosecurity risk, the target evaluation team also screen cargo applications for food safety purposes.

 

About the Role:

Target Evaluators provide the first level of protection for Frontline Biosecurity Border and Food Safety Clearance in New Zealand by making an initial assessment of risk. You’ll identify consignments of interest and make the initial assessment of risk and then direct appropriate responses.

You’ll contribute to the development of risk profiles that allow more effective risk interventions. You’ll interact with the public and industry through the public counters and phones.

You can expect to be involved in a range of activities including:

  • Screen air and sea cargo documentation for biosecurity risk goods and food safety
  • Create appropriate biosecurity and food directions and apply appropriate verification
  • Complete specialist application processing for high value cargo
  • Answer queries both written and verbal from stakeholders, public and other areas of MPI

 

 Hours of Work:

This role may require you to work rostered duty periods to provide around the clock coverage (we operate a 24 hour screening service). 

 

Skills and Experience:   

You will offer a range of skills including:

  • Able to make quick decisions
  • Be a quick learner
  • Comfort working on you own as well as part of a high performing team
  • Strong customer focus
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong analytical skills – this role is all about risk assessment
  • Strong systems and Microsoft suite ability – some experience with QuanCargo and EBACCA would be beneficial
  • Be a team player

Salary range for this role is $52k to $68k depending on skills and experience.
