The Team: What we do

The Hospital Dental Service, located within Christchurch Outpatients, provides specialist dental care across dental services including Special Care Dentistry, Pedodontics, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics and Oral Medicine. We provide quality services that are integral to ensuring the health and wellbeing of our community.

We are a large team of oral health care provider including dental specialists, dental officers, hours officers and clinical dental technicians. Crucial to our service provision is the work of approximately 20 dedicated and enthusiastic Dental Assistants. We’re looking for an experienced Dental Assistant to join us as our Team Leader – Dental Assistant, motivating and fostering the development of these staff members. This opportunity will see you working across a number of specialty areas and utilising your existing supervisory and customer care skills.

The days and hours associated with this position are Monday – Friday, approximately 0815 – 1715.

The Role: Where you fit in

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Rostering and coordination of our team of Dental Assistants
  • Providing supervision and fostering the education and development of our Dental Assistants for continuous improvement
  • Ensuring all clinical equipment/materials and consumables are available
  • Proving chairside assistance to the Dentist or other clinical staff
  • Booking, preparing and organising theatre sessions for adults with special needs or paediatric patients requiring treatment under general anaesthetic

Your skills will include the following:

  • NZDA Certificate in Dental Surgery Assisting (or equivalent) is essential
  • Previous experience in a similar supervisory role is preferable
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusted relationships within the immediate and wider dental team
  • Demonstrated adaptability, with the ability to think laterally to resolve problems
  • The ability to work within a fast-paced environment and think on your feet is crucial to your success in this role
