If you are a leader with legal expertise who enjoys working within an inquiry-led organisation, rich in research stories, then this is an ideal role for you. We are seeking a team leader legal services to join the Research and Enterprise team at Massey University.

This role is pivotal in setting the tone and quality of our legal services in the Research Office. Although we are ideally looking for someone with several years’ experience in leading a team, we would also consider appointing an experienced lawyer to the role who would relish the opportunity to lead and develop a team for the first time. The role is to ensure delivery of a client-focused, responsive legal service for all internal and external stakeholders. Managing a team of three, you will be responsible for providing outstanding legal support to our researchers and staff and contribute to a culture of excellence and research success. You will provide a high standard and timeliness of legal advice to inform strategy, improve operations, and support the University’s research commercialisation and enterprise activities. You will be comfortable in rolling up your sleeves and carrying your own portfolio of legal work, as well as supporting and leading an effective team. Your ability to switch between the day-to-day detail and high-level focus will serve you well in this role.

In addition, your focus on continuous improvement of the systems and procedures associated with the legal function and best-practice will be critical. Your ability to anticipate, manage and minimise legal risk and provide pragmatic, solutions-focused outcomes for our stakeholders and translate legal concepts into easy to understand information will be integral to your success in this role. Your relationship building focus, stakeholder management and strong communication skills will also be key to your, and the legal team’s, success.

You will need a tertiary law degree, current practising certificate as a Barrister and Solicitor or the ability to obtain one, demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the following, Contract Law, Intellectual Property Law or Commercial Law.
