Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children are dedicated to supporting any child in New Zealand whose wellbeing is at significant risk of harm now, or in the future. We also work with young people who may have offended, or are likely to offend.

As part of this support, we operate four Care and Protection residences across New Zealand. Placing a child or young person in an Oranga Tamariki residence or supervised group home is never a decision that’s made lightly, and in these situations the young person may require extra support, assistance in understanding, and oversight to keep them safe. Our residences are strongly focussed on providing a trauma informed model of care which encourages achieving positive change in young people through education, skill development, therapeutic interventions, vocational and employment programmes with the goal of positive integration back into the community.


About the role:

We now have an opportunity for a permanent Team Leader, Operations, based in Epuni, Wellington, which cares for 10 exceptional young people in our residence and 4 in our group home. The residence operates 24 hours per day, seven days a week.

Working in a residential environment is both challenging and rewarding. As the Team Leader, you will help lead a team that is passionate about positively changing the course or pathway a young person is travelling on.



Responsibilities for the role include:


  • To provide support and leadership to operational delivery and strategic vision for the residence.
  • Maintain and nurture relationships with local Iwi, community groups and key agencies
  • Ensuring residential staff training and supervision requirements are met
  • Knowledge or experience in the care of at-risk youth or relevant field, for example, education, health, sports or social services.
  • The ability to think for the future, bringing fresh new ideas and ways of thinking.




About you:


You will be committed to leading by example at all times, enjoy working collaboratively and is motivated by building strong, open relationships.


In addition to this you will have the following skills and experiences:


  • Extensive people leadership skills, with the ability to lead and develop a diverse task force.
  • Understanding of the social services environment and the complexity of pressures that can impact on staff.
  • Outstanding relationship management skills and the ability to connect and build lasting relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguous and complex situations.
  • Ideally have a qualification in the field of human services.
  • Ability to lead and implement change initiatives.
  • A strong influencer with the skills and ability to provide coaching and supervision to team members with a focus on developing then to their full potential.
  • Have a continuous improvement working style.
  • A full, clean driver’s licence is also required.
