About Immigration Border Operations

The Border and Visa Operations branch is accountable for high quality and timely visa and border entry decisions. We facilitate legitimate passengers and work to manage risk at the earliest possible point by working collaboratively with other teams in INZ and international partners.

About the role

Border Officers work a 24 hour 7 day a week operation and the Technical Specialists work in a rostered basis (rostered weekends / on-call roster) across that timeframe.

The Technical Specialists are responsible for providing professional expertise in the ongoing development and management of risk and quality within Border Operations and assist in providing assurance that processes are in place and are being used to systematically identify, manage and mitigate risk and / or immigration fraud across the Border operation.

Shift work and roster pattern:

Technical Specialists are expected to work across a seven day timeframe which includes weekends and afterhours on call support on a rotational basis.  You will be required to work an average of 40 hours per week that spans a 24/7 operation. Your shift pattern may change depending on operational requirements and training. The shift roster will be set by your manager. A large degree of flexibility is required and there are times that you will be required to work additional hours to complete the requirements of your role.

Skills and experience required:

  • Communication: Demonstrated ability to adapt written and verbal communication towards learning needs, and disseminates information well.
  • Coaching: Experience coaching and mentoring staff to achieve results, and ability to encourage others to problem-solve and seek necessary information.
  • Analytical: Ability to extract valuable information from others via questioning and analysis, and can deliver solutions and decisions quickly, under pressure.
  • Quality: Aligns measures and processes within the branch to wider quality framework.  Ability to analyse quality reports and plugs training gaps.
  • Policy: Detailed knowledge of immigration legislation, policy, procedures and guidelines, plus Privacy Act 1993 and Official Information Act 1982.
