We are looking for an enthusiastic casual employee to assist with sampling and analysis of leachate from lysimeters treated with dung beetles.

About the opportunity

This position contributes technical expertise for water, soil and dung sampling and laboratory processing and analysis for a project on the impact of dung beetles on the movement of nutrients and microbial pathogens through soil. Specifically, the position contributes to:

  • Field work including maintaining leachate collection vessels, measuring and recording leachate volumes, and aseptic collection of leachates from on-site lysimeters
  • General laboratory skills for the processing (analysing samples for Escherichia coli) and handling (e.g. organising for sending via Courier to another site) of soil leachates, soil and dung samples
  • General maintenance of lysimeters
  • Collation of data in a timely and accurate manner
  • This role is casual in nature as soil leachates will need to be collected for measuring and analysis following rainfall events of sufficient duration to cause drainage. This role will be based at our Hamilton Site.

    About you

You will possess a Tertiary or technical qualification in soil science, environmental science, analytical chemistry, biochemistry or related discipline preferred and experience with soil sampling. You will also have general laboratory skills. As the role requires soil leachates to be collected, measured and analysed following rainfall events you will need to be flexible and able to work post rainfall events.
