School of Design

With a legacy of over a century in design education, Ngā Pae Māhutonga (School of Design, College of Creative Arts) is recognised as an Asia-Pacific leader in higher education for design, producing world-class research and educating practitioners across a broad spectrum of design approaches.

Ngā Pae Māhutonga educates students to be socially and culturally engaged global citizens, contributing to their communities with imaginative, collaborative, and unconventional approaches to some of the most pressing challenges facing the world today.

The School has an opportunity to appoint a full-time permanent Tutor or Senior Tutor position in the subject area of Spatial Design. Spatial Design at Ngā Pae Māhutonga is the practice of imagining, forming and constructing spatio-temporal environments. Considering qualities of space, time and sensory inhabitation, spatial designers choreograph experience in the design of places for people.

As an emerging discipline operating at the intersections of architectural, interior, urban, landscape, performance, event and digital design, spatial design explores transdisciplinary practices that challenge the ways in which we think, use and make places.

The successful candidate should have a demonstrated track record of professional activity and performance appropriate to the level of appointment, possess competence in multiple modes and mediums of teaching, and be a clear, confident and skilled classroom presenter.

They should have proven proficiency in digital modelling and rapid prototyping and proficiency in spatial visual representations and spatial technologies.

These may include the following:

  • 2D/3D architectural drawing and modelling applications including VW, Sketchup, Revit, Rhino
  • rendering software such as Indigo, Vray
  • time-based media such as Premiere Pro and other technologies/applications
  • AR/MR/VR/XR and 3D gaming platforms / applications such as Unity, or Unreal
  • situated technologies
  • lighting (architectural, performance, installations, other)

The candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to service in the form of administration and committee participation and will be required to take on different roles and responsibilities within the School of Design as needed.

An open, collaborative approach and willingness to work across areas and departments of the school, college and university is a priority.

Electronic applications are preferred by means of the Massey University website. All applications should include a letter of interest, a full Curriculum Vitae, fifteen images of creative works, and the names of three referees (with full contact details).

Enquiries may be addressed to Sven Mehzoud, Subject Leader of Spatial Design, at s.mehzoud@massey.ac.nz

Please do not email your CV and Cover letters to Sven Mehzoud. All applications should be made online, unless otherwise arranged.
