About us | Ko wai mātou

At Waka Kotahi, the NZ Transport Agency, it all starts with our people. The organisation’s performance and success depends on the people who choose to make this a great place to work and make a difference for Aotearoa. The Transport Agency has a strong future focus, understanding that new technologies and changing customer expectations mean the transport system we know today will not be the one we deliver in ten years’ time.

The Journey Management Centre team, part of our Transport Services group, delivers a transport system for safe and predictable journeys across the range of transport modes that people choose to use. They work to continuously improve how the transport system operates as a whole and ensures we are well prepared for responding to emergencies on a local and national scale. They have strong relationships with local groups and councils to ensure our plans align.

The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

This role is an opportunity for an experienced and knowledgeable person with a deep understanding of how the transport system impacts our customers. As part of a national team that is dispersed around New Zealand, you will combine a national focus with deep knowledge of local issues and a strong local presence. This role will be based in Auckland with a focus on the Auckland region.

This role will draw on a potential range of backgrounds, so we are keen to hear from you if you think above the operational and have worked in a senior level in local or central government or private sector with a direct association with transport.

As the Journey Manager you will be at the forefront of our most complex issues involving customer journeys in your region. You’ll look beyond the day to day operations of the transport system to influence and drive, creating a joined-up approach to how we make the most of the existing transport system, to continually improve experiences for our customers.

This role is an exciting opportunity for someone who may not necessarily want to lead their own team but has a great ability to influence and persuade, so strong communication, and stakeholder engagement skills are a must.

About you | Ko wai koe

You will lead, develop and promote transport system optimisation, work with operational teams to influence and continuously improve operations planning and delivery and support our response to regional or national emergencies.

To be successful in this role you will bring:

  • A related background that may have direct or indirect association working in the transport sector. Ideal working backgrounds, may include, but not limited to, local government, transport planning/engineering/road maintenance; public transport; tourism or freight transport operations, emergency services etc
  • Political acumen and knowledge of the machinery of government
  • Proven ability in leading and shaping outcomes through effective stakeholder and relationship management expertise with all aspects of society
  • Proven ability to effectively evaluate complex problems, identify options and provide well considered recommendations and advice
  • An understanding of transport system policy, processes and statutory requirements particularly within the Government context is preferred
  • Adept facilitator, able to work with technical experts to co-design, translate and deliver solutions applying a strong teaming approach
  • Passion to coach and mentor to drive improved practice
