About our group and team

The Web and Applications Services team provides Business Analysis, Development, and Testing for priority business applications. We ensure that the applications used throughout the ministry (and increasingly by many in the wider Education Sector) are available when they are needed, are reliable and are of high quality. We provide resources, including staff, for projects. Once a project is delivered the Web and Applications Services team is responsible for supporting it.

About this role

We are looking for an experienced and creative UI/UX Designer to permanently join our team!  This role sits within the Ministry’s Web Services Team which is part of the ICT group based in Wellington.

You will be will be responsible for the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design of our various websites and applications. You will ensure that all elements of the user experience are designed with the user at the centre. You will also provide expertise and advice within the team and across the business to enable the Ministry to be the best of class in the digital space.

We have many exciting projects on the go, so if you have experience in agile methodologies, enjoy a fast paced work environment and a fun team culture then we are keen to meet you.

About you

As the Senior Software Engineer in the Ministry of Education you will:

  • Combine UX thinking with design execution, to produce usable and intuitive user interfaces for websites and applications
  • Provide advice and guidance on the implementation of UX research methodologies and testing activities
  • Conduct user research through workshops, surveys, interviews, and usability testing
  • Work across a wide variety of interesting projects
  • Enjoy a modern working environment in which effort, a sense of humour and a positive attitude are highly valued
  • Work with like-minded colleagues who share information and focus on business goals

You will have the following skills:

  •  Experience as an UI/UX Designer or similar role
  • Experience applying user-centered design (UCD) and interaction design methodologies
  • Experience using user research, evidence and best practice to develop an understanding of user needs
  • Experience creating and validating wireframes, mock-ups and interactive prototypes
  • Working knowledge of the following technologies and software: HTML, CSS, Design Systems and prototyping software such as Adobe XD, Sketch, UXPin
  • Excellent communication skills and empathy for the user
  • Exceptional time management, organisation and planning skills.

You should have the following qualifications and experience:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent proven experience.
